EMD Calculator — Earnest Money Deposit for Tenders
Earnest Money Deposit (EMD), also called bid security, is the amount a bidder deposits to show a serious bid. It is usually a percentage of the estimated tender value set by the tendering department, and is refunded to unsuccessful bidders after the award.

How this is worked out
EMD is usually 2%–5% of the estimated value; many NITs state a fixed rupee figure instead — use that if given.
Micro and small enterprises registered on Udyam (for the item being procured) and startups are often exempt from EMD — check the NIT and upload your certificate.
Frequently asked questions
How much is EMD in a government tender?
It is set in each tender document, commonly around 2% of the estimated cost, sometimes as a fixed amount. Registered MSMEs are exempt from EMD in many central government tenders, including on GeM.
When is EMD refunded?
To unsuccessful bidders after the contract is awarded; for the successful bidder it is usually returned or adjusted once the performance guarantee is furnished.
Figures are for planning. The conditions in your tender document or contract always take precedence.
